Create Cate, by Jewel Nelson (2022)

For Middle Grade Readers

Create Cate is a story set on a fantasy “cat-astical” island where what you believe creates your reality. With themes steeped in the law of attraction, the book is suitable for middle graders but can also be a good addition for older generations and adults who want to find inspiration and lessons on overcoming self-doubt.

A captivating read, the book alternates points of view between six different characters with the protagonist Cate, a young orphan who struggles with self-doubt and fear. Only her quirky grandmother supports her within the family, her dazzling aunt has trouble with her abusive partner and cannot be concerned about other matters. In school, Cate encounters a tyrant school principal and an unbalanced schoolmate who brings her to the brink of death.

To survive she has her best friend to help her overcome all her doubts and make her confident again. Not forgetting a funny panda emigrant, the infamous boxer Muhammad Ali, a spiritually awakened teacher, and a swarm of enchanted dragonflies that help her along the way. A singular, anthropomorphic cat storybook, pick this one up if you want a fantasy novel that encourages friendship, imagination, and empowerment.

Don’t Paint the Cat, by Julia Inserro (2019)

Children's picture book for 4 to 6 year olds

Don’t Paint the Cat is an incredible cat story ideal for children between 4 and 9 years old. It is perfect for bedtime reading tell-tales that will comfort your little ones and lure them to deep slumber land. The beautiful illustrations complement it for more fun.

This is the story of Nyla. She enjoys painting Wally the cat, which is quite like an obsession. But this does not go on for long. At some point, Nyla’s mom overreacts and says there will never be more cat painting. However, instead of Nyla putting the painting to a halt, she establishes some ground rules that Wally the Cat agrees to. Everyone is happy.

This fascinating story has lessons for both parents and children to ponder on. It is an important reminder that problems can be solved by coming to a consensus and that mistakes happen. Through this book, children will also learn how to reasonably fight for what they love.

Lost and Found Cat, by Doug Kuntz (2017)

Children's picture book for 4 to 7 year olds

If you want a book that introduces compassion, love, and different topics to your children, this one is a must-have.

It tells the story of an Iraqi family that is compelled to leave behind their lovable cat KunKush. However, due to the family’s undying love for him, they take him with them to Greek, hiding him as a secret traveler.

While crossing a chaotic and crowded boat, Kunkush’s carrier breaks, and he gets lost in the crowd, terrified. The family’s efforts to find Kunkush are in vain, and they leave him to continue with their journey sadly.

Later on, Greece workers stumble on the lost cat. Uniting him with his family becomes their mission, and they come together to spread the word of Kunkush on social media and the internet. At long last, Kunkush and his family reunite in a new home.

This book is perfect for 4-8-year-olds, and it will teach them the importance of looking out for one another and lending a helping hand as they enjoy the beautiful illustrations.

Pete the Cat and the Mysterious Smell, by James Dean (2022)

Children's picture book for 4 to 6 year olds

This book is ideal if you want to enjoy a laugh-out-loud mystery cat novel. It features unique characters and beautiful illustrations, making reading even more lively. I particularly love how goofy this book is and its exciting language.

In the book, you find Pete the cat and his school friends, who are excited since it is pizza day. However, before they can begin enjoying their meal, a weird smell emanating from somewhere in their school hits them. Could it be rotten radishes, dumpster trash, or stinky socks? They will have to find out. They search the entire school, including the gym, the salad bar, and the playground, to discover the source of the awful smell. Grab this book to find out if they succeed in this quest.

Children will love the mystery in the story as they recite the lines. The characters are also well executed to teach young ones tangible lessons about teamwork.

Inside Cat, by Brendan Wenzel (2021)

Children's picture book for 2 to 4 year olds

Inside Cat is a rhythmic tale that also has delightful humor. Your little ones will marvel at the illustrations and the plot that harmonizes this story. I love that Brendan has captured the mind of a young reader by telling an imaginative story in a well-detailed form.

This is a story about a cat who thinks he knows everything there is to know about the world. He gathers all this while wandering and roaming inside a house as he looks through the windows to see all the exciting things. What he does not know is the surprise that awaits- there is another beautiful world beyond indoors that is a lot wilder and more fun.

This story encourages children to be imaginative and observant, and Brendan has excellently achieved that with captivating illustrations. Children will marvel at the cat book's various details, like different room decorations and animals, as they see how each detail affects the cat and his behavior.

The book also sends a message that being indoors can be fun as well. It will be a perfect choice if you have little ones who are never in the house.

Megabat and the Fancy Cat, by Anna Humphrey (2019)

Children's cat book for 7 to 10 year olds

This book is about accepting change and will be a good fit to add to your cat books collection. It tells the story of Megabat and his girlfriend, Birdgirl, who are looking forward to Christmas at Daniels's house. But the present Daniel unwraps is surprising- Priscilla, the cat.

She is soft, fancy, and fluffy, and Daniel feels she is possibly the best Christmas present yet. But then Daniel's affection for his cat gets more attention than his friendship with Megabat. When calamity ensues, their only solution is to find a way to get rid of the disruptive cat. However, there is more to Priscilla than meets the eye.

I love the humor and the adorable illustrations in this cat book. Just what any kid needs. It also has unforeseen twists and turns, so children will be glued to the pages to discover what will happen next. However, the most incredible thing about this book is that it teaches children to be willing to adapt to change, particularly with friends. With Christmas coming up, this book makes the perfect gift for any young ones.

Warriors, by Erin Hunter (2022)

For Middle Grade Readers

Warriors is an enjoyable heroic cat story for kids that will keep them turning the pages as they get the entire grip. The language and art are also incredible for children between the age of 8-12 years.

The Riverclan cat clan is faced with a calamity, and Frostpaw is the only young cat apprentice they rely on to help them survive the ordeal. With her connection to her clan mates, she understands that her mentor, Mothwing, is also counting on her for a possible solution.

The cat clanmates have one secret code they follow. For them, every moment of weakness they face is supposed to be a secret, and no other clans should know about it. So when ThunderClan and ShadowClan venture to find assistance from their neighbors as the sickness worsens, the secret becomes harder to keep for Frostpaw.

As Riverclan navigates this calamity, ThunderClan's leadership skills are threatened, and ShadowClan's patience is failing. The balance to keep the clan together is uncertain, and it will take only one thing to change everything. What will it be?

Children will enjoy the amusing characters in this book and their zeal to fight for their clan, a lesson they will pick as well.
