Introduction

Stephen leaned back in his chair and put the phone down slowly, letting it all sink in. He had just finished speaking to his long-time mentor, who also happened to be the VP of Product at their company. The news he received could change the course of his career; the company’s Executive Leadership Team had selected him for a high-profile leadership position, overseeing a team that was expected to carry the company into its next phase of growth.

A complex blend of emotions overwhelmed him. It’s not like Stephen hadn’t been promoted before – he was a top performer and held in high regard by his colleagues. But this felt different, and while part of him was eager to accept the challenge, the burden of responsibility was already starting to creep in.

Was he ready? After a brief internal, Stephen concluded that he was willing to do what it took to make the most of the opportunity. He fired off a quick acceptance text, and just like that it was official. Director of Product Development.

Over the subsequent weeks, as Stephen assumed and started to settle into his new role, it was becoming clear that he needed to change his perspective on what success entailed. This was no longer a story of personal accomplishments and successes. If he was to realize the potential that his executive team saw in him, it would require a shift in mindset. He had made an implicit promise to his organization and his team and needed to chart the path forward.

The team he had inherited was large and underperforming in many regards. One thing Stephen knew is that he would need to make significant changes to the status quo in order to realize the true potential of his team. He needed them to think and behave differently.

This started with him, and as Stephen began to reflect on how his own style and behaviors could permeate through the team, he unknowingly started down the journey of learning what it meant to be an authentic leader.

Every leader assumes an implicit and meaningful responsibility to their organization and teams the moment they step into the role. Effective leadership is about more than just achieving personal success or advancing your own career. It's about inspiring and empowering others to achieve their full potential, both individually and as a team. This means putting the needs of your organization and your team before your own personal interests.

Let’s start by exploring what it means to be a truly authentic leader and how to cultivate a leadership style that puts the needs of others first.

At its core, authentic leadership is about being true to oneself and one's values, while also demonstrating empathy and compassion towards others. This requires a level of self-awareness and transparency that can be difficult to achieve in a leadership role. However, the research is clear; authentic leadership can have a significant positive impact on organizational outcomes, such as employee satisfaction, performance, and retention.

In contrast, leaders who prioritize their own personal gain over the needs of their team and organization can create toxic work environments and undermine morale and productivity. This type of leadership is often characterized by a lack of empathy, transparency, and ethical decision-making.

To become an authentic leader, it's important to prioritize self-reflection and self-awareness. This means taking the time to reflect on your values, beliefs, and leadership style, and being honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses. It also means being transparent and open with your team, sharing your thought process and decision-making with them.

Throughout this book, we will discuss and apply tactical empathy, demonstrating how integral it is to being an authentic boss. This involves putting yourself in others' shoes and seeking to understand their perspectives and experiences. By demonstrating empathy towards your team, you can build trust and foster a positive work environment that values open communication and collaboration.

Effective leadership also requires a focus on the bigger picture. This can mean making difficult short-term decisions if it means being able to stay aligned to core values and focused on the mission.
