The Moment Before Dying by Marek Záhorec
Family. Respect. Betrayal.
When Tony Castello, a soldier of the Falcone family, finds himself at the wrong end of a gun, his future doesn't look very bright.
The trigger is pulled, and Tony thinks about the steps that brought him to this point.
Taking place in the 1920s, The Moment Before Dying contemplates what it means to be family and the decisions we make. The story follows Antonio Castello, a war veteran who is honorably discharged and thrown back at home, where his father is dead, and his family struggles to pay rent. In order to support his family, he finds himself in the middle of a war among the city’s mobs and the police. To keep himself and his family alive, he has to make hasty decisions, but those choices could lead to a life full of regret and uncertainty.
